Notes from the president
Budleigh Salterton AFC and SV Betheln , Germany.
The Budleigh Salterton AFC first made contact with the German town and their football team ,through our president Peter Curtis who was teaching at Honiton Community College and had set up a pupil exchange with the Realschule Gronau. Betheln is a small village very close to Gronau and an adult group from Honiton were invited there. Phil Hartnell and Mary from Budleigh came to help make up the numbers. They were hosted by Karlfried Rennemann who lived in Betheln and was closely associated with SV Betheln . This was in 1986 and Kalfried suggested that they would try to set up a soccer exchange between the two clubs. The first visit by SV Betheln was in 1987 and the first Budleigh Salterton AFC team plus club members were warmly greeted the following year. This was so successful that the exchanges continued ,the Germans came the one year and we went the next ,
. This continued for more than 25years and we still have contact with them, but soccer hasn’t been played for many years. Every other year until two years ago a group , which became smaller, travelled to Gronau /Betheln.
Several of their gifts, to the club, can be seen around the club and also in the display cabinet.
Should anyone wish, in the future , to contact them . Please let me know.
Peter Curtis (president)
